Nottingham, England (Robin Hood’s home)

Apparently, the legend of Robin Hood is mostly… well, legend. Historians suggest there may have been several different Robin Hoods, and they were probably less “noble outlaw with a heart of gold” and more “common thief.” Maid Marian? Fiction. Friar Tuck? Fiction. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor? Also apparently fiction.

The stealing, though? That part may actually have been true. 😂

Nottingham is no longer crawling with fierce, imposing medieval heroes, although you can still find little winks and nods to the legend tucked around the city.

And we had the most fabulous day wandering around on our own little scavenger hunt—searching for ancient castles, including an inn with a pretty good claim to being the oldest in England, unexpected modern art, and wonderfully old Victorian restaurants.

There is something I love about a day like this: walking until your feet hurt a little, getting a little lost, learning strange bits of history, and periodically stopping to say, “Wait. Is that really the oldest one?”

It was a perfect day. The kind you tuck away somewhere in your heart and hope you remember when you’re old and sitting somewhere thinking about all the places you once wandered.
